Do you follow Maher on Facebook? Here are two recent stories they’ve shared there!

Lucy & Hira

Hira is a new resident of Maher: an elder who was found living alone, outside in abject poverty. She was offered shelter, care, and community at one of Maher’s homes for elderly and disabled people. Maher says:

“Hira, an elderly woman abandoned by family and friends, came to Maher with nothing but a kind spirit.”

Soon after her arrival, Hira began taking initiative to care for the home and gardens. It seemed this helped provide purpose and dignity to Hira. As is customary at Maher, Hira was paid a small wage (in addition to food, housing, clothing and medical care) for the work she was doing.

In a deeply moving gesture, Hira recently presented a 2,000 rupee donation to Sr Lucy that she had saved from her earnings. Sr Lucy said it was her most grand and meaningful donation of 2024. Maher says:

Such moments remind us of the power of kindness, generosity, and reciprocity. Thank you, Hira Maa, for modeling that true wealth lies in the heart.”

“Children’s Day with brick kiln workers’ children in Kolkata.” Suprabha Alhat, the director of Maher’s Kolkata project and long time Maher social worker, can be seen in yellow.

On November 16, Maher centers across India celebrated Children’s Day. As shown here, the Kolkata project held a celebration for children whose parents work in brick kilns. Maher provides these children with daycare and kindergarten programs, to help nourish their bodies, minds and spirit, and to help prepare them for formal education. Maher says:

“It was a truly meaningful and heartwarming day filled with fun activities, games, delicious food, and educational sessions.

These children inspire us with their resilience, and we are grateful to have shared this special day with them, creating moments of joy and learning.

Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative and made it a memorable day for these incredible children!”
